I am struggling with a sex addiction and I need advice?
I don’t need smart answers or a$$hole remarks. This is something that I have been battling with and has led to serious depression in my life. I was diagnosed back in 2003 as a sex addict. I had no idea such a thing existed until then but I knew I always had severe problems with commitment and being consumed by men. If anyone knows about sex addiction there are two types of sex addicts, the ones who need to watch porn, masturbate, and achieve orgasms any way possible, but mines is the other type which is I don’t seek men for the sex but the sexual attention and their attraction for me. It’s like I get a "hit" off the guy’s lust for me as weird as it sounds. When I do have sex with these guys it’s not the orgasm I’m after but the attention and feeling of being the center of their world. After it’s over I go home and hit a depression and then I go back out to find another guy to give me a high so to speak so I won’t be depressed. It’s literally like the men are drugs, not human beings in my head.
In the past when I got into relationships and either problems came up in the relationship or I had that commitment phobia again, my first thing to do was to go manhunting. It was a sick cycle but I felt like I couldn’t stop. I was either going manhunting or sticking to unhealthy, abusive relationships because I was addicted to the sexual part of the relationship.
Eventually I decided to take a break from relationships and get into therapy and do what I can to fix this problem. I was gaining insight into my issues and yes the need for men became less and less over time. So three years ago I met and finally fell in love with my fiancee. He is the first guy I ever been faithful to. Although I am in love and he is great, I’m secretly depressed because I haven’t told him my past. I have been so honest with him about everything but not this because of the shame and guilt of it all. I feel even more guilty because he hasn’t had many partners in his past. I also feel guilty because when we do fight or I am feeling phobic about him abandoning me I get thoughts of being with other guys but this time I refuse to act on it.
I just want the thoughts to go away because I love him to death and I also don’t know if I should tell him about my past or let it go. I still get therapy but he doesn’t know what for except I tell him I have anxiety issues so he doesn’t know anything else. What do you guys think? Should I set it to him straight or am I better off continuing treatment and letting it go? I feel so terribly guilty.

My answer is going to be simple and to the point.

NO relationship is easy and half (or more,) fail for whatever reason. If a relationship isn’t based on honesty and trust to begin with, it is doomed from the start in my opinion.

If this has been a part of your past and you are still in therapy, (this is part of WHO you are,) your partner should know. He will either accept it and the two of you will deal with the issue together, or he won’t. If he won’t, this isn’t the right person for you.

I think you should tell him "little by little" but I would hold off on the part about cheating… especially that he is the first guy you haven’t cheated on. Yeah, you’re suppose to tell him everything and get it all out in the open as they say in the textbooks, but I don’t think I would as you have described him.

First, you don’t need to feel ashamed. In your mind it may seem real strange and perverted, but to him, it won’t be that way. Only because you feel that you don’t have control and couldn’t get control on your own emotions do you feel weak and something to be ashamed of. I use "ashamed" in place of embarrassed as that is what I think you are saying. He will probably like the fact that you are turned on by him being turned on.

However, if it is true shame… it would be the shame that you kept it from him and didn’t fully open up. In that case, consider that all of us have fantasies about other people when we are having sex from time to time, but know it would be poison to tell your partner, "Guess who I was thinking of when we were doing it?…"

Next, Guilt. I also wouldn’t put too much emphasis on this. The reason you are feeling guilty is that you feel you are keeping something "big" from him. In this case, the only reason it seems "big" to you is because you are fearful that you may cheat. You feel as if you need to warn him, and if you don’t warn him, it is like a betrayal in advance.

Just put your mind to it that you will not cheat on him. I think you should also consider what may happen if you share this with him. You tell him when you feel insecure (him abandoning you) that to feel better you have thoughts of being with other guys. Now look at it from his perspective. He will feel trapped. When he gets mad at you, like all guys eventually do, he will be afraid that you may cheat on him. So he is always having to be cautious and not being honest. He is forced into being someone he isn’t because of your possible failure. That has to damage the relationship to some extent. You just have to make a committeemen to yourself not to act on those needs.

I also think you need to be honest with yourself. I think part of your need to share this with him is that you trust him to make you strong and he will work with you. You are wanting to lean on him or have him take some of the burden off your shoulders. While this is natural, I think this is something that you need to do yourself. Just as a child that never grows up and wants mommy and daddy to support them, it is very easy to stay in that situation. So don’t rely on him to be an enabler to your addiction. If there was a support group that he could attend, they might have the tools for him to cope, but in this case since it would directly involve him being cheated upon, I’d try to control it myself.

I have these opinions base on what the problem was with my first wife. I watched her go through 3 other husbands until she settled down and stuck with the final one. No doubt about it, she was great sex and there wasn’t anything too kinky that I wanted to do that she wasn’t game for and she was very good at what she did, but I couldn’t trust her and I wasn’t going to go through life always watching over my shoulder for her latest flings. After divorced I told my friends, "She was great and wanting to have sex all the time… the only problem it wasn’t always with me."

Good luck and keep in mind I might be too close to this to offer good advice. I know it isn’t something a psychologist would advise.

I am not a sex addict, but I do have some things that I find myself doing when feeling down that I have tried to shake for years. I won’t go into details here, just leave it at it is a sexual thing. I have been through therapy to better understand things about myself and try and learn how to control some of my urges. I would say for now, until you are at a point of feeling total control and are comfortable in discussing this about yourself with him, I would just continue with the therapy, but perhaps you should hold off on the marriage until you can be totally up front and honest with him. He deserves the truth, and all of you. You just may not be 100% there yet. Keep working on you, and things should hopefully work out.

If you are only there for 2 months out of the year why should your cousin live upstairs? Realistically, she doesn’t think less of you, your still her child! She yelled at you because "its too hot", and she’s concerned about your health. If you get sick because of the heat she would have to take you to the hospital due to dehydration. Curious question on technique?
I asked a question before but one responder said that if your arms or fingers are aching then you are using the wrong technique.

If so,then when playing an Etude like Chopin’s Op.25 No.10,your arms should feel very relaxed right?However,if that is the case then would it be possible to play,say the Alkan Op.39 No.10(Concerto for Solo Piano 3rd Movement)without feeling the slightest bit of tension?Of course,this is an assumption based on someone who has acheived a high level of technique.But would this assumption be right?
I’m not confusing tension with exhaustion but I’m asking if a person reaches a level of technique which is greater or equal to the level of technique needed in a particular piece would he/she receive tension as a backlash?

Let’s separate the categories. Tension can be relieved, but don’t confuse that with exhaustion. You are using your muscles, and even though you may not have tension, if you are playing pieces of great difficulty, it is normal to be tired. Also, muscles have to be taught to breathe (aspirate). You only get that through experience.

I liken it to this: If my brain were transplanted into, say, a body of a welder, would I still be able to play the piano? Absolutely I would. However, I would have poor muscle tone, and probably no endurance. I would have to teach my muscles to aspirate properly, and then I would be back in business. I know how to use my muscles in a way that keeps them loose. However, when I am done practicing, I am tired. Not tense, tired. Were I to learn the Alkan, I would build those muscle responses into the early learning of the piece, so that I could last through the performance.

P.S. You don’t just use your fingers. You use the entire body, and as I gained more experience, I learned to use my fingers less and my arms more.

And in answer to your added question, the answer is no. If you are effective at dealing with tension, then you will not be paid back with tension. As an example, a few years ago I programmed the 4 Chopin Ballads. About 2 weeks before the first performance, I decided I had never played them all back-to-back. I did that, and almost fell off the bench from exhaustion. I took 5, and did all four again. Tension never occurred, it was just simple exhaustion. It is that way because I work during practicing and performing to alleviate tension.

Well when you play the piano, you should only be moving your fingers, with your wrist moving up and down to relax it. If your arms or fingers are aching that means your fingers and arms are too tight and not relaxing.

For me, sometimes my arms and wrists can hurt because of too much tension, especially when the piece is full of urgency and tension, hence my body movements go along with it.
However, you mustn’t be too tense when playing, you should also tend to relax now and then (:

If he is just using you for sex and doesn’t want a relationship and you do want a relationship, then tell him you want to end it with him. You don’t have to go into a lengthy explanation of why. Just tell him it’s over. He might want an explanation and if so, give it to him. Even if he offers to change, I wouldn’t give him another chance. Some guys will say that to get you to stay in a friends with benefits relationship with no real intention of changing. Too bad you have to see this guy every day.

- (no racism intended. im not racist at all)are there places where african americans don’t like whites to intrude, or places where mexicans do the same? the approximate percentage of african americans, mexicans, asians, people from other places around the world?
- hows life for ethnic people? how are african americans, asians and mexicans treated? how is life for someone who doesn’t earn much? someone gay, or lesbian or bisexual?
- any street crime? violence? gangs?
- how are the job opportunities? how are the jobs? jobs in which area? arts? economy? law? medicine? other?
- are there thieves? how many times is someone’s house broken into in one year? how is crime overall?
- if someone were to live there for over a couple of years what kind of clothing should he or she bring? boots, coats, jeans, ski pants, swimsuits, flip flops?… all? how often are boots and coats worn? how often are flip flops and swimsuits worn?

- same as all of new england, really. the winters have always been really cold, and the summers excruciating. of course, i am exaggerating. it is a beautiful place, and no wonder my parents chose it to be my birthplace, even though we live in massachusetts now, i still go there all the time and its great.
- about equal. there are lots of buildings, but there are parks as well.
- shopping is great!! thats practically the main event of my regular visits there. go to the providence place mall, i highly recommend it!!! ive been going there since i was little. they have dave&busters, Tiffany&Co Coach, Apple, Hollister(great selection!) Nordstrom everything. yes to abercrombie, but im not sure about urban outfitters or american apparel. no sorry there are no saks fifth avenue. and barneys prob not. but i could so live in the providence place mall if i had to.
- not sure. nothing extreme, at least.
- not sure, either. im only 14 so i dont really pay attention to any of that.
- not much crime. Washington Park, Elmwood, South Providence and the West End are the poorest sections of Providence, so i definitely dont recommend living there, because thats where most of the murders are. none of the murders are random, but by relationships (off wikipedia ) in my experience, though, i was at the Capital Grille (prob my all-time favorite restaurant. their filet mignon is amazing and YOU HAVE TO TRY THEIR COCONUT CREAM PIE!!!!!) with my family and we were in there for a while and we were in a parking lot and we noticed that our car had a huge dent in the front of it. this isnt that normal, but i vividly remember it. its not that common, though.
- not sure about that either, but its the state capital (obviously) so there must be some opportunities. when i was born my dad wanted to live there because he had a job up there (for Laidlaw, now First Student buses, now runs his own company) and so ya.
- crime is not all that bad (not nearly as bad as boston, anyway). of the 239 US cities, its ranked 84th for crime (boston was 28th) but its really because of the poor neighborhoods.
- i would definitely bring a variety!!! haha but not too much because, like i said, there are so many great stores at the Providence Place so you probably only need to pack 5 outfits tops it sometimes gets pretty windy, but definitely wear layers because new england weather changes every halfhour, basically. boots-like uggs? probably. jeans yes. ski pants not unless u want to go skiing. swimsuits probably but hollister and abercrombie are a few minutes away just in case. flip flops heck yes for summer.
- not a whole lot, that i’m aware of. im not a tourist, really, but ik there are some. my cousin just graduated from university of rhode island (URI) and i went to her graduation and im pretty sure its a good school but i think there are some grads in the city. ive seen a number of 20s and older teens in providence and in the mall, and the median age of the whole city is 28. the majority of the citys population is for 20 to 24 ys old, a large student population
- mostly young-ish. there are a LOT of hispanics- 36% of the entire citys population is hispanic which really adds a lot to the crime rate (im not being racist either lol but they make up pretty much all of the poor neighborhoods i mentioned). in 2000 about 25% of families in the city were under the poverty line. HISPANICS GO BACK TO SPRINGFIELD…I MEAN SPAIN!! (sorry springfield, mass is notorious for the large hispanic population, too, even worse than providence) but they prob wouldnt have The Capital Grille or Tiffany&Co if there weren’t so many rich ones, too!!
- i would live there if i were right out college, but i want to go to Oxford so maybe England, but that’s just me! im proud to be from there (even though im not anymore, and i wish the illegal immigrant security was much tighter because if it was tighter this country would be AMERICA AGAIN!!!! and a much better place.) live in general is good, as long as you stay away from the poor sections and drive modest cars when out in public!!

How many games must be played to determine the tournament winner?
In a basketball tournament, each team plays until it loses a game, then it is out of the tournament. If 64 teams are in the tournament at the start, how many games must be played to determine the tournament winner?

You pair up the teams:

64 teams > 32 games

That eliminates 32 teams. So you have 32 left. Pair them up:

32 teams > 16 games

That eliminates half again. Keep it up:

16 teams > 8 games

8 teams > 4 games

4 teams > 2 games

2 teams > 1 game

After that, you are of course done (one team left).

The total is:

32 + 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 63.

This is actually related to a rule in mathematics:

2^(n-1) + 2^(n-2) + …. + 4 + 2 + 1 = 2^n - 1

But it’s more obvious than that! Just think. How many teams need to be eliminated to have one left? All but one. That requires one game per team to be eliminated.

So to eliminate 63 teams, you need 63 games.
